Listing hundreds of places in Britain and Ireland, this guide gives details of their connections with the lives of famous writers. The illustrations are of writers, their houses or the landscapes associated with them. This second edition has provided the opportunity for new information, often supplied by readers, to be incorporated into the text. Living authors are sill excluded, but altogether 137 new authors and 105 new places have been added, and the Welsh and Scottish representation has been increased. A wealth of information and anecdotes is provided: for example, when John Evelyn saw a painting in the chapel of All Souls College, Oxford, he wrote in his "Diary" that it "seems too full of nakeds for a Chapell"; and Charlotte Bronte was so overcome by her first glimpse of the sea at Bridlington that she burst into tears.
