Issues in Sociology is a series of topic books designed for A level students and equivalent courses in schools and colleges. The series is intended for personal use by students, covering a range of topics. Each volume covers one key area of the A level syllabuses and approaches it through a selection of original sources which students can analyze and assess for themselves. The aim is to emphasize the process of sociological enquiry and the questions which follow the readings will encourage students to assess the arguments according to sociological principles. The author notes that although gender is not a discrete topic in the examination syllabuses, it is difficult to understand the position of women in employment, education, politics and the family without knowing how their circumstances relate acrosss these areas. In this work the structures and processes are all viewed from a gendered point of view and illustrated with written and statistical evidence.
