The "Maths in Action" series is a complete revision of the Scottish maths course "Mathematics in Action". It provides a differrentiated course in mathematics that delivers the 5-14 guidelines and the National Curriculum in England and Wales, and Northern Ireland. The revision takes into account requests from teachers using the course. It offers a more helpful sequence of topics for both 5-14 and the National Curriculum. Each students' book is supported by a photocopiable teacher's resource book and, in the first two years, with revised books of extra questions and further questions. The students' book includes: each chapter starts with a "Looking back" exercise, and ends with a "Check up" exercise in order to give the teacher an indication of students' attainments to date; more questions have been included-graded at three distinct levels (A, B, C) in order to provide suitable material for pupils of all abilities; a large collection of revision exercises have been added; answers to every questions (except "Challenges", "Investigations" and "Brainstormers") are now included in the students' books; and an easier-to-use layout. The series provides a teaching system with several levels of difficulty that is appropriate for class, group or individual study. Thus, students can work at their own pace and level. Students' books 1 and 2 cater for students in mixed-ability classes, and the content is arranged so that all can study the same topics - through exercises graded at three distinct levels (A, B and C). Students are generally expected to answer the A questions, and then proceed to the B, and possibly C questions, as they are able and as time permits. The questions are also graded within each exercise. "Investigations", "Puzzles", "Challenges" and "Brainstormers" are spread throughout each chapter, and provide challenges in problem-solving and applying mathematics. This booklet consists of questions which parallel the B and C questions, but are generally more demanding. The questions are arranged in exercises which are directly related and cross-referenced to the exercises in the students' book. Answers are included.
