Synopsis

'These stories open with the impersonal simplicity of folk tales and before you know it you have drifted into a world where it seems not only plausible but somehow inevitable that a man should turn into a snake, a boy seduce his father, a desert tribesman mutilate and rape one of his travelling companions' - James Lasdun. All of Bowles' most extraordinary stories are in this new selection: including Pages from Cold Point ; The Hyena ; Unwelcome Words ; The Frozen Fields and the devastating A Delicate Prey .

Born in New York in 1920, Paul Bowles is considered one of the most remarkable American authors of the twentieth century. He began his artistic career as a composer and travelled widely in Europe and North Africa, settling in Tangier with his novelist wife Jane in the 1940s. Bowles is often credited with being a literary inspiration to the Beat authors.
