  In July 1992, Colonel Mark Cook, recently arrived to take charge of the British UN peace-keeping forces in Zagreb, met Dr. Monica Topic. She showed him the ruined local orphanage, and when she became dangerously ill, he promised to rebuild it. Despite the fact that he was married with children, he had fallen in love with Dr. Topic. Within three months Lipik had been destroyed, the people killed or driven from their homes, and the orphans had been evacuated under fire to another part of Croatia. When Colonel Mark Cook was sent out to command the British contingent of the UN Protection Force in Croatia, he had no idea of the emotional impact the scenes of devastation would have on him.
