Synopsis

In examining compulsive eating, anorexia and bulimia nervosa, this book explores the background to the problems, discusses why women seem more prone to suffer them, describes the disorders in detail and offers suggestions for therapy and self-help. Section 1 examines the social, historical, and psychological background to the problems, looking in particular at why women especially suffer from them. Section 2 describes each of the disorders and explains them as a response to the sufferers circumstances. Section 3 points the way to a psychotherapeutic response to eating disorders, examining the potential for individual, group and family therapy, and self-help. The book is of interest to those who suffer from eating disorders, family and friends and women who, whilst not ill, feel they are losing control of their eating habits.
