This volume is specifically designed to be used in a course in which the study of software engineering is combined with a student-team software development project. The principles and techniques of software engineering are presented in a straightforward and pragmatic way so that they can be immediately applied to the student's projects. The text follows the stages in the development of a software system. For each stage a small number of methods and techniques from those widely known in software engineering are introduced and each method is then described in sufficient detail that it can be applied to the student's projects. It combines the best features of prototyping with the power of traditional design methods, provides both simple and more advanced examples and a complete case study to illustrate the techniques and to serve as guidelines. It also provides chapter-end exercises that allow students to practise the methods on a small scale before applying them to their projects and covers a number of additional topics not directly related to the advancement of the project.
