Book Overview: This book is a comprehensive introduction to the Visual Basic 2005 programming language. It is written for programmers who are new to VB 2005 and new to object-oriented programming, but who have experience with another high-level programming language such as C or perhaps a scripting language like Perl or PHP. It is written in the Deitel's signature live code style where every programming concept is explored in the context of a complete working program, not a code fragment. All program code is carefully documented, and output screens appear in the text right next to the code listings. The book contains a remarkably rich library of sample program code, over 26,000 lines of VB 2005 code. Deitel books are known for their completeness, and this one does not disappoint. It covers everything from VB 2005 fundamentals up through such advanced topics as XML, ADO.NET, ASP.NET, Web Services, and VB 2005's new generic collections. All coverage in the book will be updated to Visual Studio 2005. The previous edition of this book was released in August of 2002, and has sold just under 11,000 copies domestic.

This is by far the best VB 2K5 book I have found to date. I have purchased numerous titles in the last year, but this book blows them all out of the water. The teaching method and extensive code samples are a god-send. I especially enjoyed the Object-Oriented Programming section, the XML section, and the extensive use of UML. The Exception handling, ADO.NET, Web Services, and ASP.NET sections were also top notch. I literally replaced two Microsoft Press books and two Wrox books at work with this one book.
