Synopsis

This companion volume to the book Best Walks in North Wales provides 36 magnificent routes arranged according to area together with a graded table of difficulty. The area encompasses the whole of the country that lies south of the Snowdonia National Park - Plynlimon, scene of the first battle of Owain Glyndwr's rebellion, Elenydd, the high barren moorland between Llandovery and Llangurig, a wild country steeped in history and in legend, the Radnor Forest, and both the South Wales National Parks - the Pembrokeshire Cost Park, which includes the cathedral village of St.David's and the Preseli Hills from which the Stonehenge blue stones were quarried, and the Brecon Park, itself divided into several mountain blocks of Old Red Sandstone that offer excellent walking. South of these, the Gower Peninsula is included, as is a walk around the town which epitomizes the industrial South Wales valleys. Finally, there is the Wye Valley, the most beautiful river valley in Britain, and since the valley represents the western edge of the Forest of Dean, the book ventures over Offa's Dyke to include a route in the forest itself. As with the companion volume, Richard Sale explores the archaeology, history, geology and natural history of all the areas by way of the walks. The book also includes details of local transport and a list of other walks in that area.
