Synopsis

Sonny and Hazel, two exiles from Ulster, meet at the London funeral of a friend. Sonny dreams of becoming a country singer in the mould of his idol Hank Williams and persuades Hazel to accompany him on a summer odyssey through the West Country, where the two innocents confront disturbing realities. Maurice Leitch won "The Guardian" Fiction Prize in 1969 for "Poor Lazarus" and was the recipient of the 1980 Whitbread Prize for Fiction for "Silver City". He has also written "The Liberty Lad", "Chinese Whispers" and "The Hands of Cheryl Boyd".
