The Spoken Word Project consists of three pupils' books and a Teacher's Handbook . The series provides a range of material for pupils to talk about in pairs or groups. A number of spoken language modes are developed including projecting, predicting, explaining, arguing, narrating, comparing, reporting, describing and summarizing. The books aim not only to develop pupils' competence in the use of spoken language, but also to develop listening skills. Motivation to listen to others is built into the tasks, leading to co-operative discussion techniques and a willingness to consider alternative viewpoints. The author is an advisory teacher of English and is the author of Storyworlds .
