The Times Picture Collection London

The Times Picture Collection London

by IanHarrison (Author)

Synopsis

This photographic portrait of London captures the changing face of the capital through the 20th century. This is a collection of images, the majority from the photographic archives of The Times , taken over a 90-year period by a large team of photographers. Together they provide a kaleidoscope of images of London, different than previous collections. These images display an unusual portrait of the nation's capital: most people would recognise Trafalgar Square, but very few have seen it from Nelson's point of view; many people have seen the chimneys of Battersea Power Station, but not its cavernous interior. The multicultural nature of London is evidenced in the street markets, the rough sleepers, the commuters and the population eating and drinking in the bars and cafes. Along with Ian Harrison's informative narrative it provides an interesting portrait of a multi-faceted city.

Author Bio
Ian Harrison had three careers before turning to writing -- working as a theatre lighting designer, as a fish wrangler for a German advertising agency, and as Scenic Supervisor in Europe's largest television studio. He then downed tools and picked up a pen, first as a researcher for television documentaries and then as an author. He has worked on two other titles for Times Books, and this is his fifth book on the subject of London.
