Bringing a fresh perspective to these houses by showing them in the context of their entire grounds, the photographs in this book draw on the "Millennium Map", the first ever complete, seamless arial photographic map of Britain, and a modern Domesday Book in the making. Still being created, the story of the Millennium Map, which with its pin-sharp quality, is a fascinating one. The English part of the map has been the first to be shot. Starting in April 1999, light and weather permitting, four specially equipped aircraft flew the length and breadth of the country in strips - rather in the manner of a lawnmower - each one carrying state-of-the-art camera equipment. The planes systematically photographed England from an average height of 5,500 feet, recording every object below right down to a minimum size of 25cm. So far over 75,000 individual photographs have been taken on rolls of 9 inch film, each roll measuring over 500 feet long. "Historic Houses" is a selection of vertical aerial photographs of notable buildings from all over the United Kingdom.
