  Covering the period 1912-1916, this volume begins when Lloyd George is at the pinnacle of his success and achievement. Yet in the following two years he is plunged into turmoil in both his personal and political life. With his career threatened by financial scandal, he enters into a liasion with a woman half his age, and is faced with fresh and demanding issues regarding Liberal social reform and the question of Irish settlement. With the outbreak of European war the whole course of his life is altered and within weeks he is transformed into a great war minister.
