Gordon Graham argues that Christian charity, as our basic motivation for helping each other, cannot be reduced to a political or a psychological concept. It is a religious idea. It goes beyond a concern for justice and human rights, and beyond a concern for psychological healing or wholeness. The book therefore contains a novel critique of some forms of liberation theology and of Christian counselling and establishes a case for liberalism and for the separation of Church and State, and argues that modern civilization cannot get along without Christianity.
