This dictionary gives the user guidance at a glance on all spelling forms, and also shows the points at which it is acceptable to hyphenate. The dictionary gives extensive coverage with over 146,000 words. Every word for which one or more acceptable hyphenation breaks exist has these shown by a plus sign, printed in red to make it easily identifiable. All the material in the dictionary is derived from a machine-readable electronic dictionary, which was itself created from the Collins English Dictionary . Each main word is followed by any words that are derived from it, the derivative forms being indented under the main word. It is often these derived forms that cause uncertainty - for instance, is the t doubled at the end of benefit when adding -ed or the e dropped in glance when adding -ing? The arrangement of the book means that all existing related forms are shown together. Where acceptable variant spellings exist, such as judgment and judgement, both are given. American spellings are also shown, clearly labelled. Geographical and other proper names are included.
