Few construction contracts are fully designed when a contractor tenders and the contract is let. Detail design work and changes to design (often of great consequential effect) occur once construction work is underway and most of the main construction contracts therefore make express provision for variation instructions and their valuation. These provisions can be extremely complex, are often the source of dispute and give rise to extensive claims. This book considers provisions for variations under the main forms of construction contracts - JCT 80, the JCT Intermediate Form, the Agreement for Minor Building Works and to a lesser extent, NSC/4, NSC/4wa and DOM/1. It includes tables and examples in addition to an analysis of the principal issues.
