"Active Science" is a complete skills-based course for 11-13 year-olds. It works on the principle that pupils learn best doing things rather than just reading about them, and by getting continuous expert feedback. Each pack includes pupils' books, copymasters and a teacher's guide. The pupils' books included single or double-page spreads, most of which include a specific assessment opportunity focusing on one of the skill areas, whilst the "Extras" at the end of each spread provide activitie to extend the topic. Each pupils' book is accompanied by a set of copymasters, containing both a bank of worksheets and a range of assessment material. The worksheets provide a variety of activities to support and extend activities in the pupils' book. Assessment material includes, end-of-unit tests, self-assessment sheets, a test of basic practical and data-handling skills, record of achievement sheets, and end-of-course tests for each skill area. The teacher's guide explains fully the ideas behind "Active Science" and gives detailed guidance for each spread which includes a list of apparatus needed, appropriate video resources, specific criteria for each assessment opportunity and suggestions for further activities and investigations.
