Synopsis

The bestselling author of Hold My Hand, I'm Dying and Roots of Outrage returns to his most popular subject - South Africa - for his fourteenth novel of high adventure and political intrigue. Born in Rhodesia and educated in South Africa, John Gordon Davis first became known as a writer of action-packed novels of adventure, romance and political insight set in vividly evoked exotic locations with his bestselling Hold My Hand, I'm Dying. Since then he has written thirteen more international bestsellers, including Roots of Outrage, his acclaimed epic chronicling the last forty years of South African history, and, most recently, The Year of Dangerous Loving, a courtroom thriller set in Hong Kong. Now, he has returned once more to the country he knows best for his highly topical new thriller, which centres on South Africa's momentous Truth and Reconciliation Commission - at which amnesty was offered to those who confessed to crimes committed during the Apartheid era. At its centre is Major Jack Harker, a former undercover operative for South African military intelligence, who since the end of Apartheid has started a new life in New York with writer Josephine Valentine. But his world is suddenly thrown into disarray by the announcement of the Commission and the questions it forces him to face. Should he seek amnesty by confessing to crimes committed in the service of his country? If not, would others betray him? And would Josephine ever forgive him if she discovered the truth about his past? But then again, would he even be given the choice? His confession would implicate a lot of powerful people, and it soon becomes clear that they will go to any lengths to ensure he will never be able to testify.
