The Divine Sarah: A Life of Sarah Bernhardt

The Divine Sarah: A Life of Sarah Bernhardt

by Arthur Gold (Author), RobertFizdale (Author)

Synopsis

Born in Paris in 1844, Sarah Bernhardt dominated the theatrical world for over 50 years with performances as Phaedre, Salome, Joan of Arc and Marguerite in "La Dame Aux Camelias". One of the first international stars, she toured America, Canada, Brazil and Australia and caused scandal with her offstage life that included affairs with Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas and Gustav Dore and her rivalries with contemporaries such as Eleanora Duse. In 1899, at the age of 55, she played Hamlet and even the amputation of her right leg failed to stop her stage career. She continued to act until a few months before her death in 1923.
