Stand the Storm: History of the Atlantic Slave Trade

Stand the Storm: History of the Atlantic Slave Trade

by EdwardReynolds (Author)

Synopsis

Over a period of 300 years, 10 million slaves were brought from Africa to the Americas to work on the plantations, giving rise to serious socio-political implications which are still being felt to this day. They were herded into slave ships in appalling conditions that went unheeded until the social pressures of the 19th century put an end to the trade. Stripped naked, shaved and crammed into the steaming holds of the vessels, thousands died before they could be auctioned, but the supply was so plentiful it made little economic difference. This book looks at the history of the slave trade, examining the reasons for and practices of slave transportation.
