  Over a period of 300 years, 10 million slaves were brought from Africa to the Americas to work on the plantations, giving rise to serious socio-political implications which are still being felt to this day. They were herded into slave ships in appalling conditions that went unheeded until the social pressures of the 19th century put an end to the trade.
