Funeral Games

Funeral Games

by Mary Renault (Author)

Synopsis

As Funeral Games opens, Alexander the Great lies dying. Around his body gather the generals, the provincial satraps and the royal wives, already competing for the prizes of powe and land. Only Bagoas, the Persian boy mourning in the shadows wants nothing. Tracing the events of the fifteen years following Alexander's death, Funeral Games sees his mighty empire disintegrate, and brings Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy to a dramatic close.

Media Reviews
With the haunting-haunted Funeral Games, Mary Renault completes her recreation-and-creation of Alexander the Great. Now that Renault's trilogy is complete, it is plain that her Alexandriad is one of the twentieth century's most unexpectedly original works of art -- Gore Vidal Brilliant and brutal... she has retained her unnerving genius for making the remote past live without diminishing its remoteness and alien glitter Sunday Times
Author Bio
Mary Renault was educated at Clifton High School, Bristol and St Hugh's College, Oxford. Having completed nursing training in 1937 she wrote her first novel Promise of Love: her next three novels were written during off-time duty whilst serving in the war. In 1948 she went to live in South Africa but travelled widely. It was her trip to Greece and her visits to Corinth, Samos, Crete, Delos, Aegina and other islands, as well as to Athens, Sounion and Marathon, that resulted in her brilliant historical reconstructions of Ancient Greece. Mary Renault died in 1983.
