Media Reviews
The scripts for this successful series in which Dawn French plays the buxom Rev Geraldine Granger are presented appropriately in small format prayer-book style and supplemented by information about the village of Dibley, its history and present inhabitants. It's a funny and original comedy idea and could have been fraught with problems in view of the controversy about the introduction of women priests. But Curtis seems to have negotiated that hurdle unscathed, as one would expect from an ace writer with Not the Nine O'Clock News, Mr Bean, Blackadder, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill to his credit. The book will be backed by a big marketing spend and publicity campaign, Dawn French and Emma Chambers (the dozy but desirable Alice) will be doing bookshop signings, and BBC1 is repeating the series in the run-up to Christmas.
