Materials for Engineering: A Fundamental Design Approach

Materials for Engineering: A Fundamental Design Approach

by Brian Derby (Author), David A . Hills (Author), Carlos Ruiz (Author)

Synopsis

"Materials for Engineering" looks at the mechanical properties of conventional materials and the new high-structured ceramics and composites from the viewpoint of the structural designer. Assuming an elementary knowledge of materials science, plus knowledge of the basic strength of materials, the fundamental principals of elastic design, yield criteria, brittle fracture, fracture mechanic creep, fatigue and time dependent failure are applied to modern materials engineering. Differences in mechanical behaviour are then related to the appropriate design procedures. The text has a full section of references and examples, most with solutions and a large section on composites. It covers a wide range of materials, some still in the experimental stage and uses the perspectives of the structural designer to deal with the properties of materials in design. It also emphasizes the way in which macroscopic performance is governed by microstructural factors, leading to a combined course of study.
