Political Issues in Nursing: Past, Present and Future, Volume 1

Political Issues in Nursing: Past, Present and Future, Volume 1

by RWHITE (Author)

Synopsis

Nursing is now a complex society far more intricate in its structure than most other comparable occupations. Decision making in nursing is largely shaped by the economic and social policies of government, and thus history, politics and nursing policy are inextricably linked. Factors such as the increasing scope and cost of health care, the role of private medicine, as well as unionization, recruitment and manpower planning have meant that nursing is no longer a local issue but must be regarded in the much wider perspective of society at large. This new series is intended to be a focus of international discussion on politics and policy in nursing. Contributors have been invited to debate a wide range of issues using a variety of tools for analysis such as historical studies, sociology, economics, labour relations, systems analysis, management theory and political science, taking into account the differences in nursing practice and political systems in different parts of the world. As well as identifying problems or targets, and discussing solutions and strategy, the series aims to emphasise a hitherto neglected aspect of policy making, that is the analysis of the consequences of policy decisions, and the examination of how policies have come to be made and implemented.
