by Building Research Establishment (Author)
Defect Action Sheets have been published by the Building Research Establishment since 1982. They provide information on common faults in house building, how to avoid them and advice on remedial work. They have become popular with architects, surveyors, site managers and others concerned with improving the quality of new and existing housing because of their concise and authoritative guidance. This manual brings together over 130 of the published Defect Action Sheets, grouped together by subject (walls, roofs, drainage, etc). The sheets were originally published as single A4 sheets. In this Manual, the two sides of the original sheets are placed side-by-side so information on a single topic can be seen at a glance. A numerical list of all the Defect Action Sheets is included as well as a contents list and a comprehensive subject index. Defect Action Sheets were compiled by the BRE Defects Prevention Unit, consecutive sheets often dealing with design and site aspects of a particular defect. They were originally developed to provide local authorities with information on how to avoid common defects in house construction, but they are directly applicable to all types of housing, both public and privately owned, and to other building types. The advice given is based on authoritative information available within the Building Research Establishment and frequently also on site inspection and assessments. Everyone concerned with new and existing housing should find this manual a useful desk-side source of information and advice. This book should be of interest to surveyors, architects, builders, consulting engineers, private companies and local authorities, and public and specialist libraries.
