Physiotherapy in Respiratory Care: A Problem-solving Approach to Respiratory and Cardiac Management

Physiotherapy in Respiratory Care: A Problem-solving Approach to Respiratory and Cardiac Management

by Alexandra Hough (Author)

Synopsis

Using a research-based approach, this text in its second edition continues to use the problem-solving approach to provide clarity of thought and challenge traditional assumptions. The new edition has been updated and expanded to include cardiac rehabilitation, more illustrations and much of the recent research into this area. The foundation for problem-solving is provided in the first two chapters where the relationship between physiology, accurate assessment and practice is discussed. Physiological reasoning continues throughout the book. In the main the book is devoted to physiotherapy management and its rationale, including a section on pain management, which challenges the myth that chest physiotherapy need be painful, a discussion on the practical treatment of breathlessness, and advice on the management of on-calls and emergencies. Also included is a coverage of the pathophysiology of respiratory diseases and their medical management and separate chapters on children and people with hyperventilation syndrome. Pulmonary rehabilitation has been expanded, with extra emphasis on home management to match the changing policies in health care. Outcome measures and critical review are a theme throughout, with the final chapter devoted to evaluation of practice. This book should be of interest to students and practitioners in physiotherapy, respiratory and intensive care, and nurses in cardiac care.
